Iarnród Éireann has unveiled the first train of its new DART fleet, marking a significant advancement in Ireland's rail infrastructure. This development is a key component of the DART+ Programme, which aims to modernize and expand the DART network to better serve the Dublin region's growing public transportation needs.

The new DART trains, manufactured by Alstom, feature battery-electric hybrid technology, enabling operation on both electrified and non-electrified tracks. Each five-car train measures 82 meters in length and can accommodate up to 551 passengers, including 204 seated.

The trains are designed to reach a maximum speed of 145 km/h. Equipped with lithium-ion batteries, they offer a range of approximately 80 kilometers on non-electrified sections, facilitating extended service without the immediate need for additional electrification infrastructure.

The new fleet is designed to enhance the commuter experience with upgraded seating, real-time travel information displays, and improved accessibility features for passengers with reduced mobility. Increased capacity aims to alleviate congestion during peak travel times, contributing to a more comfortable journey for all passengers.

The DART+ Programme seeks to extend the current rail system beyond Dublin, connecting with areas such as Drogheda, Maynooth, and Hazelhatch. This expansion will significantly broaden the network's reach, offering a viable alternative to car travel and supporting a more sustainable, less congested urban environment.

Following this initial unveiling, the new trains will undergo a testing phase to ensure they meet operational and safety standards. Full deployment is anticipated by 2025, with additional trains to be introduced as the DART+ Programme progresses.

The introduction of this new DART fleet aligns with Ireland's goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and advance sustainable public transportation options. As the DART network expands and modernizes, it is expected to provide a viable alternative to car travel, supporting both environmental objectives and improving daily commutes for residents across the region.

Jim Meade, Chief Executive of Iarnród Éireann, stated: "The start of DART+ Coastal is a very significant milestone for our organisation. It means all aspects of the DART+ programme, which will revolutionise public transport in the Greater Dublin Area, are now underway."
