Security guards introduced on Dublin Bus to tackle anti-social behaviour

As of October 2024, security guards are now patrolling Dublin Bus services in response to an increase in anti-social incidents. This move comes as part of a 20-week pilot program designed to enhance the safety of passengers and staff across the city’s bus network.

Recent data shows that reports of anti-social behavior on Dublin Bus services have more than doubled since 2019, rising from 500 incidents to over 1,000 in 2023. In light of this, Dublin Bus has introduced two mobile security units, which will operate in both the north and south areas of the city. These units will be present on buses from the afternoon into the early morning hours, focusing on times and areas with the highest reported issues.

The security guards will have a visible presence on board, primarily tasked with de-escalating any disturbances that arise. Their role will also extend to helping prevent fare evasion and assisting with crowd control, particularly on weekend nighttime services. This initiative is expected to improve overall safety and customer experience, with Dublin Bus closely monitoring its impact over the coming months.

The securoty teams will operate Sunday to Thursday 14:00hrs to 02:00hrs and Friday and Saturday 16.00hrs to 04.00hrs.

The pilot program aims to reassure both passengers and bus drivers, many of whom have been on the front line of dealing with disruptive behavior. With feedback from employees and customers, Dublin Bus hopes to make this a permanent safety measure, pending necessary funding.

This initiative complements existing security measures, including the use of on-board CCTV and continued collaboration with An Garda Síochána.
